Building the Team - Assigning Responsibilities

Building the team up, by setting the responsibilities discussed through the various meetings with THe BBC User Experience team, enabled a table to be produced with activities and resources mapped against a time line.

Week 4 Resource availability and Key Tasks

This is generally known as a Gantt Chart, named after Henry Gantt (1861 – 1919), who devised this method in the early 20th Century (Circa 1910's), whilst working for an industrial foundry, where schedules and work-flow was critical to the production of steel.

The advantage of the Gantt Chart is that as the weeks progress, it is easy to add tasks and activities of a fixed duration, and it is also possible to keep track of all resources so as to recognise "bottle-necks" or critical constraints caused by over use of a particular resource capacity. (Resources can be people, labour or machines, that have a fixed capacity of production rate)

Conclusions;

  • While this method (using a Gantt Chart) is the generally accepted form in industrial and commercial projects, it seemed that some group members were unfamiliar with the method and will need some time to get used to working against a plan of this nature

  • It is worth considering other methods to present timescales and activity tasks and a variety can be explored to find the most acceptable to a varied group.
